Course overview

Using the rich variety of plants and flowers that surround the Tumbly Hill Centre in Kingsbridge, this friendly and inclusive course will offer the opportunity for you to study a different flower each week, then learn how to draw it with accuracy and confidence. By studying each plant closely you will be able to interpret its structure and colours in all their complexity. This is a relaxing and meditative watercolour painting class for those who are interested in exploring and finding out more about the Natural world, as well as producing paintings of great beauty.

Course description

During this five-week course, you will use the flowers available from late Spring to the start of Summer: an optimistic, vibrant time of year with plenty of choice and many challenging flowers to study. A chance to familiarise oneself with the voluptuousness of tulips or the intensity of roses.

By layering colours in closely observed sequences, you will learn to make an accurate representation of Nature in all its variety to produce delightful paintings.

The tutor is very patient and supportive and will demonstrate the drawing and painting of various aspects which are relevant to the subject, as well as showing the work of a range of Botanical painters, both contemporary and historical.

Learning to produce a closely observed and accurate drawing of an object in front of you is a very useful skill, which can be extended further into wider artistic practise. An increased knowledge of the range of watercolours with their individual qualities and amazing luminosity is another skill that is a feature of this course.

The group is friendly and relaxed and open to people of varying abilities. Ther are plenty of opportunities to participate in the meditative act of ‘looking’, ‘drawing’, ‘analysing’ and finally ‘painting’ – a challenging but ultimately satisfying sequence of actions.
